In the spirit of Youth-Shaped Scouting we held a Pack Night with a difference.

Rather than the Leaders telling the Cubs what we will be doing each week, we asked the Cubs to tell the Leaders what they would like to do.

So we asked the Cubs to come up with lots of ideas, and each Six chose an activity that they wanted the Pack to do.

The aim was to hold our first Youth-Shaped Scouting Pack night on 1 February to mark the beginning of YouShape Week.

The pictures show the planning session …

Over the Bank Holiday weekend, 28 families came together for the 99th Reading Family Camp.
All the participants had the opportunity to try some of the activities that Scouts, Cubs and Beavers get up to at Camp, including caving, archery, rifle shooting, orienteering, fire lighting and learning some useful knots (there really are some useful knots!)
We also went on a walk to a local museum run by the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust, which gives a fascinating insight into the history of flight in the UK.
All the food was cooked and eaten …

Our Cubs were privileged to have a visit by local artist and art teacher Richard Ennis – also one of our Cub’s dad – to celebrate Vincent van Gough’s 162nd birthday. We sang Happy Birthday, but sadly there was no cake and 162 candles might have been a fire hazard anyway.

Richard gave the Cubs an introduction to drawing, then showed us how to create a face in crayon which the Cubs then followed with their own interpretations.

It was a very engaging evening – one of the Cubs told us that …

We had our own YIST (Young International Support Team) member Saskia from Dubai to show us round and make sure we got to where we were meant to be on time.
Following dinner which was generously provided to us by the “1st Wurst” Scout …

Many were apprehensive at first, but as can be seen from the photographs, they all had an experience to remember!

The grounds around Our Lady of Peace and Blessed Dominic Barberi Church in Earley had become very overgrown during the summer, so the 99th Reading Scout Group, who meet in the Parish Community Centre, volunteered to sort it out.
The windows in the Church and Community Centre are now glistening, the patio behind the Church and the area around the Car-park and Community Centre are weed-free and swept clean, gravel around the car-park is back where it should be, the hedge and car-park are litter-free, and the Church gates are rust-free …
